Krazy Kat

Description: Have a fun day and make this Krazy Kat out of three gourds and three tubes of QuickWood with dowels for legs and wire for ears and tail armature. This is an all-day class, and we will not paint the sculpture in class. You will learn different techniques for applying QuickWood and texturing the fur.

Students Must Bring: An apron and any clay tool you have.

Pine Needle SunCatcher

Instructor: Barbara Nelson

Skill Level: All

​Description: Bird Inspired Suncatcher, choose a pre-made Cardinal, Bluejay or Hummingbird center. 
We will frame the center in pine needles, using a variety of stitches, including wraps, Fern and Popcorn stitch. A variety of threads in coordinating colors as well as natural and dyed pine needles will be available.
In finishing we will attach a hang string so that your suncatcher is ready to be displayed (optional).

The class is designed for "Experienced" Beginners through Advanced. If you don't have any prior experience with pine needle basketry you'll be able to complete your project using beginner stitches.  All supplies and tools will be provided but feel free to bring your own favorites.  For more project info and photos visit: dyedpineneedles.com/Classes/melbourne2025.htm

Iridescent Button Gourd

Instructor: Deborah Hildinger

​Description:  Students will begin with a pre-colored iridescent gourd. The first thing to do is to draw the basic design of the gourd. These lines will then be carved. This will be followed by wood burning a simple pattern along the top of the gourd. Dimples will be added in the wood-burned areas with a small ball burr for the placement of seed beads.

The seed beads will then be glued into the dimples. This will be followed by slip-stitching raffia to the rim and finishing the gourd with shell buttons. Decorative knots with beads will add a finishing touch. Gourds will be approximately five to six inches in diameter. The gourd shown is 4¾ inches in diameter. The sample shown is for reference only.​

Students Must Provide: Students must bring a carver with assorted ball burs and a wood burner.

Chipped Gemstone Rims

Description: Learn to embelish your gourds with the beautiful Chipped Gemstone rim. This class will lead you through the process of selecting and attaching the Chipped Gemstone rim to a gourd.

Checkerboard Basket

Description: This is a fun basket to make!  As you weave it, you will start to see the design of a checkerboard.  The basket will have a 7-9"gourd base prepared with spokes, painted and sealed ready for weaving.  Reed colors may vary. 

Students Must Provide: An apron and a towel.  Tools will be provided, but if you want to bring your own, please do.

From Igba to Sekere

Woven Indian Corn

Description: Weave three ears of corn. A great introduction to basket weaving. Decorate with raffia. A fun addition to your fall decor.

Leaf Carving on a Gourd Shard

Instructor: Chad Bridges

Skill Level: Any

Cost - Members: $65 Non-Members: $70

Description: During this class, I will be demonstrating my carving and texturing tips, tricks and techniques I use in the creation of my art! Together we can break the mental barrier that all of us at one time or another have experienced with regard to the approach of designing an art piece. We will discuss how to find both the design and physical balance your gourd art will need in order to create a gallery worthy piece.

Students will apply the carving techniques to their gourd shard in three stages; setting lines, lowering background and carving their design. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please understand that you may not be able to complete the gourd shard carving during the class, but you will leave with the knowledge to complete your carving.​

​

Instructor will provide: 3 gourd shards per student.

 

Students Must Provide: High speed Carving tool and bits, such as Dremel, Master Carver Micro-pro, etc., and all of your safety PPE (dust mask, safety glasses, ear plugs if needed).

Springtime Mandalla Vase

Description: Make your dots come alive with springtime colors of aqua, turquoise, pinks and lavenders. And to add that extra touch, we will glue on sparkling crystals.

Students Must Provide: A few extra hair dryers would be helpful since teacher only has one, otherwise teacher provides everything

Faux Raku

Description: Creating a gourd to resemble raku pottery.  A variety of gourds will be available to choose your basic shape.  The tops will be removed and inside cleaned. We will add texture by carving and gouging.  Additional designs may be added with clay.   With many layers of paint, sand and glue we will create our faux pottery piece. A twig, bird or butterfly may be added.

Pretty Roses

Description: Learn to paint roses, use rubber stencils, and carve filigree, and carve off gourd skin.

​

Students Must Provide: Paint brushes, small to medium angle is best; carving tool with filli point or zip point and burr to skin the gourd. 

 

Instructor will provide: Gourd with pattern provided by teacher.  Also pattern with picture.

Gourdeous Flowers

Description: Learn to make many different types of flowers out of wool. Make, a small sunflower, lilac or lupin. You will have a choice of what to put your flowers in. Choose a gourd vase, metal wagon, mini clay pot etc. You will make two different flower projects.
