Carving Basics and Beyond

Description: During this class, I will be demonstrating my carving and texturing tips, tricks and techniques I use in the creation of my art! Together we can break the mental barrier that all of us at one time or another have experienced with regard to the approach of designing an art piece. We will discuss how to find both the design and physical balance your gourd art will need in order to create a gallery worthy piece. Students will apply their carving techniques in three stages, setting lines, lowering background and carving their design. All skill levels are welcome.

Instructor wlll provide: Small gourd, image design/pattern, white transfer paper, or other transfer method,  pencils, scissors, markers, tape.

 

Students Must Bring: High speed carving tool (such as Dremel, Master Carver Micro-pro, etc.); bits: 60 grit diamond bur set (this set will allow you to complete the entire gourd), 5mm-bud-stump-cutter, saburr-tooth-18-shank-14-diameter-flame (yellow), 1-inch Sanding Discs with 2ps 1/8 shank Hook and Loop Sandpaper Abrasive Tool Attachment 40-600Grit, Inverted tapered Diamond; safety PPE, (dust mask, safety glasses, ear plugs if needed); apron.

Lost at Sea Basket

Description: In this class students will create a small basket, using qwuikwood  to form shells & shell imprints to give the appearance the basket was lost at sea for a  length of time. Then students will paint using the verdigris technique to give the appearance of an aged basket; last we will add a reed rim and handle. 

​

Students Must Provide: Heat gun or hair dryer; Sharp scissors; old towels and gloves

Green Man Series - Spring/Summer (Choose one)

Description:  This is a fun class and a chance to let your imagination fly.  You will learn the interesting history of the "Green Man" over the ages.  You will also learn how to create a low relief sculpture using Quick Wood on half of a canteen gourd 8" to 9" in diameter.  I will review the 8 key proportions for creating a face so your "Green Man's" face will look realistic.  Instructor will provide all supplies needed.  Sculpting tools will be included, but if you have favorites bring those along with your smile.  

 

Choose which Green Man you want to make.  You will only have time to make one.  There will be Green Man Kits available for the other seasons.

Woven Sampler

Description: While weaving up the side of a gourd, incorporate many weaving techniques. Class covers twining, triple twining with stepups, and  twill. Glass crow beads can be added for embellishments.

Description: In our ornament we will use two types of burning. Each student will be able to choose the finishing technique.
1- We will use a torch to burn of the gourd and leave black.
2- Using wood burning, we will burn the part of the drawing.
most student will complete the project in class.

Description: Students will begin with a pre-dyed gourd. First thing to do will be to add carved dimples for seed beads. Seed beads will then be glues into the dimples. This will be followed  by slip stitching raffia to the rim and finishing the gourd with buttons. Decorative knots with beads will add a finishing touch. Gourds will be approximately five to six inches in diameter. Gourd shown is 4" inches in diameter. Sample shown is for reference only. 

Students Must Provide: a rotary carver with small ball burrs (these will be used to make a dimple in the gourd to hold a glued seed bead). Everything else is provided. Don't forget to bring an apron!

Description: Learn to make a beaded dress for a hardshell gourd music Instrument. The Sekere is the time keeper in Afro-Indigenous Music, and is the instrument that makes the Dancer, Dance.

Description: A shimmery copper-colored gourd base (inside and out) will be woven with black and natural colors of round reed to the top and ends with a simple but nice rim of natural wooden beads.

Description: In this class students will learn to create cute whimsical Gnomes with qwuikwood on bannana gourds. Each student will create two Gnomes; they may choose to mount on wood base or hanging ornaments. These adorable characters are such fun to create and the sky is the limit as to how you can decorate your Gnome.

Description: Students will paint 3 gourd shards then add embellishments to create a three-dimensional design. Resin will be applied and bails attached. Finally the gourd shard pendants will be hung on necklaces.

Students Must Provide: paint brushes, an apron, and disposable gloves. If you have a UV lamp, please bring it to harden the resin (or we can share mine).

 

Instructor will provide: all other materials including gourd shards, acrylic paints, glue, bails, necklaces, and embellishments.

Description: In this technique, we will boil our small ornament to acquire the green background color of the gourd, Then we will start carving our design. Finally we will apply paint to obtain the white lines. Most students will complete the project in class. 

​

Students Must Provide: Dremel or micro pro master carver, mask, round tip bits (the smallest), towel and apron.

Description: Using a medium to small gourd we will carve it totally with wood burning.  A twisty/turny pattern will be drawn onto the gourd then burned out.  The top/lid may be burned if desired.

The gourd will be cleaned on the inside.  Then parts painted with metallic paint and coated with glitter.  A flower or pod may be added.  The gourd will then be attached to a drift wood base. 

​

Students Must Provide: Wood burner and carving tips ( I use "j" and several flat "v" shaped ), bring what you have and we will supplement.  I have several wood burners to share but not enough for a whole class.

Description: I will show you how to  mask off a black sprayed 4-5" diameter gourd. Then using glue, foils, and pigment micas in different areas to create at stain glass effect. The gourd will be finished with resin to give the glassy look and pop those colors. You will pick up your gourd the next day,  The rim will not be done in the class.

​

Students Must Provide: Heat gun, gloves, apron, mask and safety glasses.

Washi Framed Gourds

Description: Learn how to work with cradled frames so that you can hang your gourds on the wall.  Students will collage Japanese washi paper on their two provided mini gourds. They will then learn to gold leaf on a gourd stem and mount gourds into the 8" x 8" provided frame. Please note photo shown is for reference only.
Size: 8 inches x 8 inches.

Students Must Bring: a rotary carver with small ball burrs (these will be used to make a dimple in the washi paper to hold a glued seed bead). Everything else is provided. Don't forget to bring an apron!
