Mini Gourd Basket Ornament

Description: In this class students will create an adorable mini basket ornament. Students will use caning to create a lively wrap and spiral knot around the basket and then using cane they will create the handle. These baskets can be used as holiday ornaments or in everyday decorations.

Students Must Bring: Scissors, apron and an old towel for keeping lap dry.

Vase of my Dreams

Description: This design came the depths of my dream and imagination, A torch can make a variety of burning tones in this class you will help us to create details of your vase.
Finally we will use a combination of blue and white paint in the carved areas.
Due the short class time and the change in season, I will be giving a demonstration in class; the students will receive the gourd already burned.

Fanciful Bird

Description: Learn how to make a fanciful standing bird from a gourd! Students will draw their design and then add color to a white-washed banana gourd and wings. Lines will be carved to separate colors. Wood burned patterns may be added as well along with filigree in the wings. Metallic paint is added to smaller areas. Once all is dry, dimples are added for beads with the carver. After gluing seed beads on the bird and wings, holes are then drilled for twig legs and wings are glued on. Final touch is gluing in legs. Sample shown is for reference only.

Students Must Bring: a rotary carver with small ball burrs, and a wood burner with assorted pens. The filigree burr is optional. The one that I use is from www. welburngourdfarm.com. It is called a zip cutter burr and retails for 14.95 plus S/H. Don't forget your apron!

Treasure -Trove

Description: We will be creating special gourds from the treasures we have collected. Every gourd will be different-choose from my stash or bring your own. Gourds will be cut depending on the shapes of the treasures, then cleaned and finished inside and out. The shell may be colored with a variety of inks, dyes etc. or left natural. Treasure(s) will be attached and embellished. Finally the gourds will be sealed.

Description: Learn to make a beaded dress for a hardshell gourd music Instrument. The Sekere is the time keeper in Afro-Indigenous Music, and is the instrument that makes the Dancer, Dance.
