Carving Basics and Beyond

Description: During this class, I will be demonstrating my carving and texturing tips, tricks and techniques I use in the creation of my art! Together we can break the mental barrier that all of us at one time or another have experienced with regard to the approach of designing an art piece. We will discuss how to find both the design and physical balance your gourd art will need in order to create a gallery worthy piece. Students will apply their carving techniques in three stages, setting lines, lowering background and carving their design. All skill levels are welcome.

Instructor wlll provide: Small gourd, image design/pattern, white transfer paper, or other transfer method,  pencils, scissors, markers, tape.

 

Students Must Bring: High speed carving tool (such as Dremel, Master Carver Micro-pro, etc.); bits: 60 grit diamond bur set (this set will allow you to complete the entire gourd), 5mm-bud-stump-cutter, saburr-tooth-18-shank-14-diameter-flame (yellow), 1-inch Sanding Discs with 2ps 1/8 shank Hook and Loop Sandpaper Abrasive Tool Attachment 40-600Grit, Inverted tapered Diamond; safety PPE, (dust mask, safety glasses, ear plugs if needed); apron.

Description: In this class students will learn to create a fan shaped Tenerife design, using chip stones and waxed thread, over the shell of a gourd. We will first layout the fan and drill the holes for the Tenerife, then we will use alcohol inks to add color to the exterior of the gourd if desired then each student will create their own unique Tenerife design.

Students Must Bring: Apron, gloves, heat gun/hair dryer, drill with 5/64 bit; scissors; compass, pencil or chalk pencil for drawing layout on gourd.

Description: Charming Cameo baskets of Fairies & Flowers. Make a small pine needle display basket that  looks great on a small-area wall, or a charming gift. Description: In our ornament we will use two types of burning. Each student will be able to choose the finishing technique.
1- We will use a torch to burn of the gourd and leave black.
2- Using wood burning, we will burn the part of the drawing.
most student will complete the project in class.

Students Must Provide: Wood burner, Dremel or micro pro master carver with different bits.

Asian Inspired Vase

Description: Students will sketch their own design on a pre-dyed gourd and then utilize filigree and/or wood burning to create their finished design. Students will then add pre-dyed reed in existing holes and learn how to wrap waxed linen thread around the gourd and reed. Beads will be added as a finished touch on waxed linen thread. Gourds are approximately six inches high by three inches wide.

Students Must Provide: Students Must Bring: a rotary carver with small ball burrs, a filigree burr, and/or a wood burner with assorted pens. The filigree burr that I use is from www. welburngourdfarm.com. It is called a zip cutter burr and retails for $14.95 plus S/H. Gourd, reed, waxed linen thread and seed beads are provided. Students may also bring their own beads to decorate the waxed lined thread. Don't forget your apron!

Description: Learn to make a beaded dress for a hardshell gourd music Instrument. The Sekere is the time keeper in Afro-Indigenous Music, and is the instrument that makes the Dancer, Dance.

Description: a beautiful shimmery silver classy steam punk looking gourd bowl will be woven with black and natural round reed to make a bowl.  the top will be a simple looping of spokes with silver beads to make a very attractive rim.

Green Man Series - Fall/Winter

Description: This is a fun class and a chance to let your imagination fly.  You will learn the interesting history of the "Green Man" over the ages.  You will also learn how to create a low relief sculpture using Quick Wood on half of a canteen gourd 8" to 9" in diameter.  I will review the 8 Key Proportions for creating a face so your "Green Man's" face will look realistic.  

​

Choose which Green Man you want to make.  You will only have time to make one.  There will be Green Man Kits available for the other seasons.

​

Instructor will provide all supplies needed.   

​

Students Must Provide: Sculpting tools will be included, but if you have favorites bring those along with your smile.

Steampunk Gourd Shard Necklaces

Description: Students will paint 3 gourd shards then add embellishments to create a three-dimensional design. Resin will be applied and bails attached. Finally the gourd shard pendants will be hung on necklaces.

Students Must Provide: paint brushes, an apron, and disposable gloves. If you have a UV lamp, please bring it to harden the resin (or we can share mine).

 

Instructor will provide: all other materials including gourd shards, acrylic paints, glue, bails, necklaces, and embellishments.

Description: This is tradicional technique from Peru.  We will learn to dye our ornament, We will boil our gourd with aniline, and we will carve the lines of the drawing and  finally we will apply the white paint to highlight the carved lines.

 

Students Must Bring: Dremel or micro pro carver different bits with small round tips.

Mosaic Rimmed Gourd

Description: Students will choose pre-colored blank mosaic gourd tiles to fit around the rim of their pre-dyed gourd. They will then add wood burned lines along with carved lines and dots. Next small dimples are added for seed beads with a ball burr. Metallic paint, and beads finish the mosaic tiles. They are then glued onto the rim of the gourd. Gourds are various sizes ranging from approximately three to four inches in diameter and of varying heights. Gourd shown is 3¾ inches in diameter and four inches in height.

 

Students Must Bring: a rotary carver with small ball burrs and a wood burner with assorted pens. Don't forget your apron!

Description: Using stencil patterns (by Robert Rush and others) we will place a design on a whole natural gourd.  Using carving bits we will bring out the bird impression and clear surrounding areas and patterns.  The gourd may be stained or left natural.  Feathers or pods may be added.

 

Students Must Bring: Personal carving equipment, if Dremel user have a Dremel Chuck #4486 and a flex shaft attached.   We will be using #105, 100, 192, and sanding wheels.  I will have several and extra attachments but prefer students to have their own.

Description: This is a team effort.  Charlene will be teaching a painting of an owl with acrylic paint on paper to attach to the gourd frame.  You will be weaving a rim with Jim.  it should be a fun project.  This is an item you can hang on your wall...probably the lightest picture frame ever made!

 

Students Must Bring: an apron, your favorite brushes, I will provide as well and a towel.
